About Dancing For A Cure

Dancing for a Cure was created in 2006 by Susan Mendoza Friedman in honor of Karen Schek who was diagnosed with Stage 3 Ovarian Cancer at the age of 51. Together, the faculty and parents of Dance Designs, where she was, at the time, director and owner, set out with a mission: to channel their dance energy to help fight the battle against ovarian and breast cancers. Inspired by family, friends, and members of the Cape Cod dance community, Dancing for a Cure now holds year-round events whose goal is to raise the awareness and money vital to finding a cure for both of these diseases.

Susan Mendoza Friedman tells the story of Dancing For A Cure

Currently, the DFAC Committee is comprised of dedicated women from across Cape Cod who work tirelessly on events throughout the year. They are professionals, mothers, and grand mothers, all who have been touched by cancer personally. They are survivors, care givers, and compassionate friends who make Dancing for a Cure the significant fund raising organization it is.

All proceeds raised are donated to a 'special fund' at the Friends of Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and to support the local cancer patients here on Cape Cod through their Outreach Program.
To date, DFAC has raised over $350,000. Of course, none of this would be possible without the amazing support of our Cape Cod community and beyond!

On March 28, 2012, Karen Schek lost her valiant battle with this silent killer, Ovarian Cancer. For her and all the millions of other women affected by ovarian and breast cancer..."we passionately continue the fight!
