About Dancing For A Cure

Dancing for a Cure was created in 2006 by Susan Mendoza Friedman in honor of Karen Scheck who was diagnosed with Stage 3 Ovarian Cancer at the age of 51. Together, the faculty and parents of Dance Designs set out with a mission: to channel our dance energy to help fight the battle against ovarian and breast cancers. Inspired by family, friends, and members of our own Dance Designs community, Dancing for a Cure is now an annual event whose goal is to raise the awareness and money vital to finding a cure for both of these diseases. Dancing for a Cure is a December holiday performance of inspirational dance, song, speakers, and more. Many other fund raising events are also held throughout the year. All proceeds raised by these events are donated to a 'special fund' at the Friends of Dana Farber Cancer Institute, Boston.

Our first two years featured performances in the intimate setting of our studio...and we raised over $12,000. In 2008, we took a leap, or should we say, Grande Jete’, and moved to the Knight Auditorium at Barnstable High School. Two sold out shows later, our combined fundraising efforts of ticket sales, opportunity baskets, bake sales, t-shirts and donations equaled $17,000. A year later, even a crippling blizzard could not stop our 2009 event from raising $20,000!

In 2010 we celebrated our new partnership with the Friends of Dana Farber. On March 12th, 2011, we held the Cape's first modern day Dance Marathon. Four hours of non-stop dancing raised over $10,000 for breast and ovarian cancer research.

With the success of our 2011 Dancing for a Cure annual December holiday shows and a variety of other fund raising events throughout the year , we have now raised to date over $150,000. Of course, none of this would be possible without the amazing support of our Cape Cod community, and we thank you!

Please join us for upcoming events posted on this website and on Facebook.
